El viernes 17 de abril, los medios anunciaron que las autoridades ministeriales del Distrito Federal habían desmantelado una red de pornografía infantil. La noticia causó mayor revuelo porque en la banda se encontraba el padre Rafael López Muñiz. Esta semana, se anunció la formal prisión del sacerdote en el reclusorio norte de la ciudad de México, acusado de pornografía infantil calificada y de delincuencia organizada.
Sin embargo, el miércoles 24 de junio, la arquidiócesis de Xalapa donde se encuentra incardinado el clérigo, salió en defensa del inculpado a quien se le han imputado cargos falsos que le han privado de su libertad.
De acuerdo al comunicado de prensa del arzobispado, Rafael López Muñiz fue víctima de la actuación parcial de la Procuraduría de Justicia del Distrito Federal. En este sentido, el vicario general da a conocer la indignación de la Iglesia local animado a denunciar estas arbitrariedades en base a las propias pesquisas de la arquidiócesis “al no haber encontrado nada de lo que se le imputa al P. Rafael Muñiz, quien ha demostrado su desconcierto y su completa impotencia al no entender las razones que han llevado a las autoridades judiciales del Distrito Federal a proceder de esta manera”.
De esta forma, ahora las instancias eclesiales abogan por la libertad del clérigo afirmando “con el corazón en la mano” su inocencia de los cargos de pornografía infantil: “estamos tomando tal postura con la conciencia de que nos movemos en la certeza moral y defendemos a una persona inocente. No estamos defendiendo a un delincuente; si así lo fuera, seríamos los primeros en apoyar la aplicación de la ley con toda su fuerza”.
Por eso, la arquidiócesis de Xalapa agradeció, la confianza y las oraciones de todos los fieles ante este caso penoso e injusto que enfrenta la Iglesia, estando al lado del que sufre y es perseguido. “Nuestro imperativo es estar donde Dios quiere que estemos, y Dios no quiere que estemos haciendo esfuerzos sobrehumanos por conservar una imagen positiva o favorable, sino estando al lado del que sufre, del que llora, del que es calumniado y perseguido, por lo que ésa seguirá siendo nuestra postura”.
El vicario general, pbro. Gilberto Suárez Rebolledo, animó, finalmente, a “quienes estén en condiciones de visitar al P. Rafael Muñiz tengan en cuenta los horarios y días de visita en el Reclusorio Norte de la Ciudad de México”.
Rafael Muñiz López y su hermano Francisco fueron detenidos en Jalapa, Veracruz, afirmando ser inocentes; el primero señaló ser párroco de San Pedro Apóstol ubicada en esa ciudad. En su declaración mencionó: “Me acusan por delincuencia organizada y pornografía infantil; yo me considero inocente, no sé por qué me tienen aquí y me involucran porque según sale de mi parroquia un correo electrónico".
