La fatiga del soldado, mejor foto de 2007

(PD).- La imagen refleja el agotamiento de un soldado y la extenuación de una nación: EEUU. Es la de un soldado norteamericano en Afganistán y fue captada por el fotógrafo británico Tim Hetherington, el 16 de septiembre de 2007. El soldado descansa en el bunker «Restrepo», nombre que tenía un soldado de origen hispano caído en combate y a quien todos admiraban en el pelotón.

El trabajo de Hetherington fue realizado mientras recorría el país de los talibanes, pegado al Segundo Batallón Aerotransportado del 503 de Infantería. Está unidad, hecha de soldados muy fogueados, opera a menudo en el Valle Korengal, al este de Afganistán

El británico Hetherington estaba en la zona enviado por Vanity Fair y también ha recibido un segundo premio en la categoría de Historia General.

Sobre la importancia de la foto, lo más impactante ha salido de los labios de Gary Knight, presidente del jurado, y gran observador d ela realidad mundial:

«La imagen muestra el agotamiento d eun hombre y el agotamiento de una nación».

En honor a la verdad, es obligado reconocer que es la foto de un guerrero al final de sus fuerzas. Y tiene una calidad humana inusual en la fotografía actual. Muestra de forma dramática a un ser humano sin velos ni tapujos.

PARTICIPANTES

This year, a record number of participants from 125 countries sent in their work, a total of 5,019 photographers, which is an increase of 12.5% compared to 2007. The total number of images submitted is 80,536. Of all participants 80% chose to enter the contest by uploading their work online.

The jury gave prizes in 10 theme categories to 59 photographers of 23 nationalities from: Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, People’s Republic of China, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA, and Zimbabwe.

Tim Hetherington, the author of the World Press Photo of the Year 2007, will receive his award during an awards ceremony in Amsterdam on Sunday 27 April 2008. The award also carries a cash prize of 10,000 euro. In addition, Canon will donate Hetherington a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III camera.

The awards ceremony is preceded by a three-day program of lectures, discussions and screenings of photography. The exhibition of prizewinners will be shown at the Oude Kerk from 29 April to 22 June and will subsequently visit over 100 locations around the world.
