El presidente Felipe Calderón felicito a las enfermeras por su día -6 de Enero- y galardonó a la religiosa Sor María Suárez Vázquez, “Sor Mary”, quien ha destacado por su trabajo con los tarahumaras en la sierra, en la Cruz Roja Mexicana y en el Instituto Nacional de Cardiología, de donde es directora de enfermería.
Al entregar el reconocimiento al mérito Graciela Arroyo de Cordero 2008, el presidente hizo referencia a “su preocupación constante para que el ejercicio de esta noble profesión se realice siempre con apego a principios éticos”. Sor Mary pertenece a las Hermanas del Verbo Encarnado, congregación donde se formó el primer grupo de enfermeras profesionales de la Escuela de Enfermería del Instituto Nacional de Cardiología, fundada en 1945 y desde entonces, incorporada a la UNAM.
María Suárez Vázquez fue designada como Subdierectora de Enfermería de ese Instituto del cual se convirtió en su Directora. Ella participó en la reestructuración del programa general de trabajo de la escuela de enfermería para que el personal alcance mayor calidad en su formación.
Durante la ceremonia, el Presidente Calderón destacó que “ningún adelanto científico por muy importante que sea puede pasar por encima de la gente, por encima de sus derechos, de su dignidad, de su libertad esencial, de cada ser humano.”
