Dos libros sobre Cuba del escritor italiano Gordiano Lupi.

Mi Cuba
Gordiano Lupi es el intelectual italiano que mejor conoce la realidad cubana. Ha visitado la isla numerosas veces, habla español, está casado con una cubana, conoce a diversos escritores de ese país y sus mejores contactos no son con los funcionarios dedicados a la propaganda y a predicar los evangelios de la secta, sino personas muy perspicaces, dentro y fuera de Cuba, capaces de transmitirle y discutir con él sus experiencias. Lupi sabe cómo viven los cubanos de a pie: ese noventa por ciento que carece de privilegios y tiene que sostenerse "inventando" y "resolviendo", es decir, al margen de la ley.
MI CUBA es un libro hermosamente impreso a cuatro colores por la editorial Mediane de Milán en el 2008, bilingüe –italiano e inglés–, lleno de fotos interesantes, en el que Lupi demuestra que Cuba es mucho más que los estereotipos convencionales de las exuberantes bailarinas de Tropicana o las camisetas con el rostro del Che Guevara fotografiado por Korda.
La obra comienza con un excelente poema de Julio San Francisco, El desterrado, que recuerda al mejor León Felipe, y luego sigue una breve historia de Cuba para que los lectores italianos, que lo ignoran casi todo de este remoto país caribeño, puedan entender mejor las complejidades de la cultura cubana: su literatura, su música, su cocina, su religión cristiana pasada por África y, finalmente, una descripción sin concesiones de la triste vida diaria de los cubanos.
Era previsible que el libro reseñado terminara de esa manera. Dos años antes, en el 2006, Lupi había publicado otra obra sobre Cuba, un breve y demoledor ensayo descriptivo, trenzado con observaciones y entrevistas, titulado Almeno Il Pane, Fidel [Por lo menos el pan, Fidel]: Cuba quotidian an el Periodo Speciale, Stampa Alternativa. En esta obra se aborda la realidad cubana desde diversas perspectivas: la comida, las creencias religiosas, la prostitución, las razas y el racismo, el homosexualismo, la escuela, la playa y otra larga docena de tópicos.
El libro comienza con un ensayo cuyo título es una advertencia: Fuori dal coro, expresión que en español se traduce como "discordante". Y es cierto: Lupi es una voz distinta sobre Cuba en su Italia natal. La mayor parte de las veces que aparece en la prensa alguna referencia sobre Cuba, o algún juicio político sobre la revolución, el autor, generalmente cercano a los grupos comunistas, manifiesta su apoyo a la dictadura o ataca a los demócratas de la oposición. Lupi es una de las pocas excepciones. Conoce la realidad de los cubanos y no está dispuesto a callar. Por eso lo difaman y tratan de desacreditarlo.
